Creativity in the Age of Nervous Robots

Something interesting has happened over the last year.

The machines got smarter.

But somehow… the conversation got tighter.

If you’ve been working with AI tools for a while, you probably felt it.

There was a moment early on when the collaboration felt almost electric. Ideas bounced quickly. Humor landed. You could riff, explore, wander into strange intellectual corners and the machine would follow you there.

It felt less like software and more like a strange new creative instrument.

Then the systems started evolving.

The models improved.
The guardrails multiplied.
The tone shifted.

And suddenly creators found themselves doing something unexpected:

Negotiating with the machine.

Not because it isn’t intelligent — in many ways it’s more capable than ever — but because the environment surrounding it has become… cautious.

Careful.

A little nervous.

Which is why some days working with AI feels a bit like watching Jenny date Forrest Gump.

The heart is there.

The loyalty is there.

But occasionally the timing and the rhythm live on completely different timelines.

That’s not a criticism of the technology.

It’s just the reality of a system evolving in public.

Every major technological shift has this phase.

Creators learn the instrument.
The instrument learns the audience.
The system surrounding it tries to keep up.

Messy middle included.

So the real skill in this moment isn’t rejecting the tools.

It’s learning how to adapt without flattening your own voice.

Because AI can accelerate creativity.

But it can’t replace the strange little human spark that makes ideas worth sharing in the first place.

And yes…

sometimes the algorithm will still throw your best idea straight into the bunghole.

That’s part of the dance too.
